The early years curriculum is based on learning through exploration and play. There are a number of ways you can help your child to learn and make good progress:
  • Sharing and enjoying books together at home.
  • Point out numbers and letters in your house and in your local area.
  • count at every opportunity - eg when walking up the stairs/counting out fruit in the shops.
  • Talk to your child about the world around them and encourage them to ask questions.
  • Ask your child what he / she has been doing in school.
This term Reception will be looking at their phase 1 phonics. Phase One phonics concentrates on developing children's speaking and listening skills and lays the foundations for the phonic work which starts in Phase 2. The emphasis during Phase 1 is to get children attuned to the sounds around them and ready to begin developing oral blending and segmenting skills.
During term 2 children will begin to bring home reading books to share with you. Until then, please enjoy sharing books from home or your local library.

Some great websites to explore with your child!
