How we teach Art and Design at The Avenue

At the Avenue we teach our art curriculum in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum, which allows children to express their creativity as well as providing them with opportunities to practise and develop mastery in the key processes of art: drawing, painting, printing and sculpture.  We ensure the children have opportunities to explore a broad and balanced curriculum that has been well thought-out in terms of progression and development through the key stages. Children are able to revisit, embed and develop their knowledge, understanding and skills each year. Art is taught in blocks which allows our children to achieve a depth in their learning, whilst linking closely with our over-arching topic.  The evidence of their work is collected within individual sketch books which follow the children through the school. Photographs of larger work, group or 3D pieces are also kept within sketchbooks.

During Term 5 & 6, Art and Design is one of the focus subjects alongside Science and Design Technology. Teaching these subjects alongside each other, allow for STEM opportunities and for children to recognise cross-curricular connections.
