How we teach Personal, Social & Health Education (PSHE) at The Avenue

At the Avenue, we have chosen to use the SCARF scheme from Coram Education to teach PSHE, as their values of Safety, Caring Achievement, Resilience and Friendship closely align with our own school core values. The scheme enables children to meet the End of Key Stage Statements as set out in the DFE Relationships Education, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education Guidance 2019. Planning maps follow a two year cycle of units which are repeated and built upon throughout Key stage 1 and 2. This ensures progression and balance between year groups, and allows children to develop and embed the following key PSHE themes as they journey through the school:

  •          Me and my relationships
  •          Valuing difference
  •          Keeping myself safe
  •          Rights and responsibilities
  •          Being my best
  •          Growing and changing (RSE)

In addition to this, we also celebrate our own 6 core values throughout the year: positivity, resilience, aspiration, respect, pride and responsibility. These core values underpin our entire school ethos here at the Avenue, and filter through into every day life in our school.

PSHE at the Avenue is taught either discretely or in weekly blocks every term. We adapt and shape or PSHE curriculum to ensure it is fully inclusive to all our children. Our curriculum is delivered in a way which is practical, thought provoking and allows opportunities for discussion and debate.
